The Mirena is a small T-shaped device that is inserted through the vagina and into the uterus. The device slowly releases the hormone progesterone directly into the uterus over a 5 year period, thickening the cervical mucus preventing sperm from reaching the egg. The lining of the uterus also changes over time, preventing an egg from implanting on the wall.
The Mirena IUD makes a great form of contraception for women who don’t want to have to remember to take a pill every day. In most cases, menstrual bleeding becomes light and often can disappear completely.
The Mirena is a very affordable form of contraception in the Brisbane region, especially if you are wanting or requiring a sedation for the insertion. Thousands of dollars would be spent at a private hospital to have the Mirena inserted with an anaesthetic, but here at GSDS, the insertion can be performed at a next for nothing cost!
